About
Alice Cheng founded A. Cheng the Label & Store in June 2003 after working at Tommy Hilfiger for 2 years to launch their womenswear division. While working as a designer, Alice had a difficult time finding original, well-designed clothing that would meet the dress code expectations required at work and at a price she could afford on her fresh college graduate salary. She saw a void in the market for well-made, simple clothing in natural fibers that was not fast fashion yet affordable. Thus A.Cheng Label (A riff on an Asian J.Crew ) was launched.
Our first collection was 3 styles, showcased out of a tiny 250 sq ft space on 443 East 9th Street. Our collection grew to include dresses, tailored skirts, and coats. We sourced the finest wools and cottons from mills in Italy and Spain and everything was made in NYC. We became known for well-made polished clothing that yet original and fun.
The A. Cheng line has been picked up by Barneys, Anthropologie, Flying A in Denmark, Beams in Japan, P45 in Chicago, Kick Pleat in Texas and many more well curated boutiques all over the world.
After 10 years in the East Village, we relocated to Park Slope in Brooklyn twice, expanding each time to our final spacious digs on Bergen Street. The A.Cheng Brand now encompasses 30 other labels that are carefully selected to sit alongside the design values of our in house label.
We are the go-to store for clothing that surprises you, and supports who you are without compromising your style. We strive to curate worldly, curious and singular finds that become beloved favorites for your closet and home.
